Grace Darling was the daughter of the keeper of Longstone lighthouse, on the most north-easterly of the Farne Islands.
In the early hours of 7 September 1838, Grace (then aged 23), looked out of her bedroom window (which was the upper window in the white ring) and saw the wreck of the Forfarshire which had hit Big Harcar, a nearby low rocky island. The ship had broken in half and one halve had already sunk.
She woke her father and they immediately realised that the weather was too rough for the lifeboat to set out from Seahouses on the mainland. They then took out their own rowing boat for the mile trip to the wreck and, in all, saved 9 lives.
Sadly, Grace died of tuberculosis just 4 years later.
