Penmon Point Lighthouse (also known as Black Point lighthouse) is on the eastern tip of Angelsey and was built in 1837, six years after the steam-powered paddle steamer Rothesay Castle sank in rough seas at the same point, taking the lives of 130 passengers and crew. The ship had left Liverpool some 10 hours previously, heading for Beaumaris. Bad weather had made it very slow going and it started to take on water at about 10pm - but the captain was drunk and none of the pumps were working. The ship had no lights, signal or flares to attract help and at 1am it ran aground and eventually broke up throwing all on board into the stormy sea.
