Coquet Island is situated opposite the mouth of the River Coquet just off the coast of Amble in Northumberland. Although owned by the Duke of Northumberland, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) run the island as a bird reserve with over 35,000 birds nesting in the summer including puffins and terns. Landing on the island by the public is strictly prohibited.
A medieval monastery was originally built on the island but in 1841 the remains were incorporated into a new lighthouse.
